We try to mentally and spiritually absorb every minute of our time here. But this experience is so divinely rich that we find it almost impossible to sufficiently absorb all of the impressions.
This morning, we practiced some Russian words and phrases, then we hung paper snowflakes and ornament balls from our living room ceiling and lights (Christmas decorations), made plans for our real-people nativity activity for FHE tonight--got out sheets and other paraphernalia to make wise men, shepherds, sheep, stable, Mary, and Joseph. It's going to be great!
Now, at 10:30 a.m., we are meeting our big Russian atheist friend who will read 14 pages or so of the Book of Mormon for us to record. We do this in a monster-size, deserted, ex-university building that is warm and silently echoes the footsteps of myriad students who roamed these vast halls for many, many decades. When he comes, we climb the uneven tile stairs to the fourth floor and lock ourselves into a tiny room that boasts two tables, four chairs, one computer, and a view of the bay way out there...
Today, we will reach the halfway point in the Book of Mormon and perhaps do a little dance of celebration. Listening to our friend read and hearing his understanding emphasis is inspiring. From time to time, he makes very astute comments that show he understands very well the power and importance of what he is reading--perhaps that he even feels the Spirit. Last Friday, when Alma returned and joined spiritual forces with Amulek, we couldn't help but compare our friend to Amulek, though we hope he will not lose his family and friends. We don't expect an angelic visitation, but we are thrilled to be on this journey with him through the greatest book on earth. We are very excited for the day he meets Captain Moroni!! Please pray for him because he is one of those rare people who can move small mountains on his own. Just think what he could do for the church here in Russia if he gained a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ!
